Life & Death: How Are You Counting?

8 years ago, on October 5th, my mom, Barbara Ann Williams, unexpectedly made her transition…felled by a pulmonary embolism. It was a horrendous shock to all who knew and loved her.

Almost 7 years ago, I ended a 28 yr corporate career, spurred in part by her death. 

6 years ago today, I married Mr. Washington, a force-of-never-boring-nature and my partner in a new life of love, passion and adventure.

5 years ago, I became a life coach. Since then, I’ve helped many women make major life moves re relationships, careers, and dream fulfillment. Freedom and Purpose! The most successful ones have this in common:

They count in minutes, hours, and days. 

They want change NOW and take targeted action to get it. The more their choices scare them, the better their lives become!

I’ve been saying that mom’s death taught me how arbitrary LIFE is, but I got it wrong. It’s DEATH that’s arbitrary. Making it to midlife means you’ve made a zillion life choices. But death? Outside of suicide, we don’t get to choose the moment. I’m continuously surprised by who dies and who doesn’t. And there’s more than one way to die, such as complacency, inertia, delusion.

87 days from now, 2019 ends. What will you do to make those days count? What, in your heart of hearts, do you want to celebrate on December 31st? What barriers to that celebration do you need to remove?

I awoke NOT feeling like going to our strength training class. As I lay there, I secretly wished Mr. Washington was feeling like playing hooky, but wasn’t hopeful. He stays pretty gung ho about the class. Lo and behold, his first words were, “Let’s stay in today.” Music to my ears! And WOW, that’s some kind of manifesting, right? Except it wasn’t. Tempted as I was, I knew what we wanted more than slugging the day away, was staying committed and consistent to our ‘health for life’ plan. So, I reluctantly responded, “No.” Commitment won! Later, we were both very glad we stuck to it.

What do you want more of in your life? 

Strength? Health? Pleasure? Adventure? Wealth? Connection? What dream do you want to become real?

We’re entering the last quarter of the year. Are you on track to get what you want? Or are you procrastinating, self-sabotaging, hiding, etc.?

Help Me Help You

In October 2016, I took the stage in my favorite New York City. I and five incredible women I’d only met a few months before put ourselves on that stage to tell our individual stories of courage. It was early in my entrepreneurial journey and I was terrified of making a fool of myself!

Who Said??!! The Remix

VIVAs Rockin’ Paris (August 2019)

Whew! A few days ago, I returned home from an epically spectacular 15-day celebration of my upcoming 60th birthday. I and (at varying points) 9-11 FAB girlfriends + one FAB friend’s FAB daughter, laughed, explored, ate, shopped, and remained in a constant state of amazement traveling through Paris, Sarlat, and Marrakech. Exhausted, Yes! And wonderfully forever changed. Too many highlights to detail to here, but best believe I’ll be talking about them for months to come. Indulge me. LOL

On March 30, 2017, I published the original blog titled Who Said. It featured the phenomenal Tao Porchon Lynch, the world’s oldest yoga teacher (101!!). My message was about ditching old paradigms that no longer serve you to flow freely in your unique desires.

One huge paradigm I ditched is thinking I have to always be comfortable to be happy. Yes, I have some foundational comfort requirements, but I’ve also learned that getting comfortable with being uncomfortable is the ticket for feeling F.E.A.R. (False Evidence Appearing Real) and doing The Thing anyway! I didn’t let F.E.A.R. keep me from…

  • investing a year out in Tracey Friley Travel’s Josephine Baker-themed trip to France and Morocco…
  • trusting that inviting my girlfriends to go with me on a two week trip would be well and end well (we’re already talking about the next adventure!)…
  • planning my own birthday parade and party in Paris, a city I’d never visited (it was FANTABULOUS!)…
  • hiring a band (recommended but still) unknown to me (they rocked it OUT!)…
  • wearing a mini dress for that party (see pic above), driving an ATV, walking through streets during a holy feast day in which goat heads and bodies were being chopped, charred, and fleeced!

Recently, I saw this Zig Zigler quote,

“F-E-A-R has two meanings: ‘Forget Everything And Run’ or ‘Face Everything And Rise’. The choice is yours.”

This woman is RISING. And I want ya’ll to RISE with me! Who Said you can’t??

The Opportunity of a Lifetime

Since August 2, I’ve been in a constant state of awe. ​5 Ways to Stop Living Small

Before I walk on the stage, I have this pit in my belly. It tightens and pushes against something inside of me. I want to walk away (wait I really want to run away) because I’m not sure I can do this in front of this group of people. I don’t know if they will nod and affirm my words. I don’t know if the audience is going to look at me like I’m crazy. I stand there, and I wonder if I should do this. Then, I cuss aloud.

Eff—-this. I’m not giving in to this fear.

I walked out onto the stage and delivered my five-minute story like a fearless and magical midlife maven.

A week later, I was featured on a television show to promote my podcast. 

Right now, I’m in Paris celebrating my 6th decade. 

In a few months, I will travel across the sea to another continent to share this journey of living happier with a group of amazing women. 

It’s all because I decided to unfriend FEAR and block her access to my brain and my body.

After years of working on this fear mindset that would attempt to take over my body and talk me out of my destiny and happiness more often than not, I am finally saying Eff- FEAR. If you’ve never met fear, you’re a lucky woman. However, if you know fear like I do, you understand the trauma and drama fear can bring into your life. Fear is the lame frenemy who doesn’t want you to do more, live better, and be happier because you’ll have to leave her behind. 

F.E.A.R. (false evidence appearing real) will have you living in a proverbial cardboard box if you don’t tell her to sit down and shut up. The box that fear keeps you in says you have to stay at that job until you turn 65. The box that fear keeps you in says you have to hold onto those friendships that side-eye you for wanting to travel the world. That box that says you can’t live out your dreams because you’re past some magical age (Lie!!)

So, how do you get out of the BOX, unfriend F.E.A.R., and STOP living small?

1. Release the norms of society.​ 65 (or whatever # you’re ‘shoulding’ yourself) is not the age that activates true living. That age is whatever number you want it to be.

2. Start thinking BIGGER.​ If you think you would like to travel to Jamaica, turn that into a bigger vision of traveling to every Caribbean island within six months.

3. Drop the naysayers.​ If you have friends who tell you of all the things that could go wrong, drop them. Yep, I said it. Drop them. We want to surround ourselves with solution-focused individuals, not naysayers.

4. Take a RISK!​ The only way to get out of the box is to JUMP, LEAP, DIVE, & FALL. Yep, I said fall…ALL of these actions will mean you may fall…and that’s fine.

5. Pat yourself on the damn back.​ You are doing what others are too scared to do (see how FEAR shows up), and you’re handling your business. Pat yourself on the back. Pay yourself. Treat yourself (here’s a trip to Europe with me if you wanna GO BIG or GO HOME).

How to Blaze A Trail In Midlife

I retired from my company two years before my official retirement date because everything in my being was telling me that chapter had closed, regardless of the corporation’s prescribed (and arbitrary) timeline.

Doing this resulted in my not getting retiree health (marrying a good government man took care of that LOL) and not becoming a member of the retiree group called Trailblazers. It’s a good group and one I don’t miss because,

I. Blaze. My. Own. Trails.

How?

  1. I know who I am.
  2. I know what I want. Self-knowledge clearly connects me with what I want. 
  3. I go get what I want.
  4. I do the foundational work to keep it. Free your mind and your ass will follow.
  5. Rinse. Repeat. Have fun. Trail blazed.

I don’t wait on anyone to throw me a party. (My 60th celebration is going to be one for the history books! Me + plus ten FAB girlfriends in Paris, the Dordogne Valley, and Marrakesh searching for Josephine Baker!!)

I don’t wait on anyone to go on a trip with me.

A rule is subject to be broken if it makes no sense to me.

I’m inspired by other trailblazers, but I stay focused on MY path.

When the going gets too tough, confusing or krazy, I get/hire help: coaching, therapy, medical. 

I value me. I invest in me. 

All of these ‘I’s’ open space for me to give my best to YOU.

So, how do you blaze a trail? By being and doing YOU.

How to Keep Your Thrive

One of my biggest motivations for coaching woman on how to let their shxt go and thrive in freedom is having had a mini-stroke at age 45. I had no warning triggers, other than being stressed as hell during that time in my life. Here are some facts:

“Despite increases in awareness over the past decades, only about half (56%) of women recognize that heart disease is their number 1 killer:

* Heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the United States, killing 299,578 women in 2017—or about 1 in every 5 female deaths.”

* Heart disease is the leading cause of death for African American and White women in the United States. For Hispanic and Asian or Pacific Islander women, heart disease is second only to cancer as a cause of death.” (World Health Organization)

My neurologist told me that the only reason I had a stroke instead of a heart attack is because the clot bypassed my heart and went to my brain.

I heeded the warning from the universe and over the next several years, I shed what I knew was no longer healthy for me to keep: 

a marriage 
a career
other people’s opinions
fear of making a mistake

THIS IS NOT A DRESS REHEARSAL.

Life is arbitrary and someday is TODAY.

What do you want to do? 

Stop waiting for a sign. 

The craving for better is your sign!

Calling All Do Better Junkies

I’m an SDJ (self-development junkie). Not because I’m broken (although there have been times when I was!), but because I love getting better. I stand with Michelle Obama in believing we are Becoming until we die. And better at this stage of life is about shedding old paradigms, rules (who said??!), and resented obligations.

And better isn’t always easy. There’s no secret or magic bullet for it. 

It’s about Getting Aware and staying Open.

It’s about Connection.

Connecting to your inner truth and guiding light.

Connecting to what you want more than you’re afraid of it.

Connecting to your Ikigai. Say what???

“The term ikigai is composed of two Japanese words: iki referring to life, and kai, which roughly means “the realisation of what one expects and hopes for.” Unpacking the word and its associated symbol a bit further, ikigai is seen as the convergence of four primary elements:

* What you love (your passion)

* What the world needs (your mission)

* What you are good at (your vocation)

* What you can get paid for (your profession)

The word ikigai, that space in the middle of these four elements, is seen as the source of value or what make one’s life truly worthwhile.
